Nilsestuen was the former secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP), who passed away July 21, 2010 at the age of 62. 08.07.09 | Purple Heart Day Ceremony

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) and the Wisconsin Department of the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) hosted a Purple Heart Day ceremony at the Veterans Home in King, Wisconsin on August 7, 2009. The ceremony honored Wisconsin veterans who are recipients of the Purple Heart for wounds received in armed conflict with an enemy force or while held by an enemy force as a prisoner of war. Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Acting Secretary Kenneth Black and Wisconsin Department of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Commander William Hustad participated in the event. During the ceremony, the U.S. Postal Service unveiled a 4-foot replica of the latest Purple Heart postage stamp.

The Wisconsin Historical Society honored the lifetime achievements of five top leaders with ties to the state on May 27, 2009 during its Fourth Annual Wisconsin History Makers Gala at Milwaukee's historic Pfister Hotel. The Wisconsin Historical Foundation produced the event on behalf of the Society, which included a reception, dinner and awards ceremony. The 2009 class of Wisconsin History Makers included Richard L. Davis, University of Wisconsin-Madison professor of bass, jazz history and combo improvisation; Harry C. "Buddy" Melges, chairman of Melges Boat Works, based in Zenda, Wisconsin; Steven Marcus, chairman of the board of The Marcus Corporation, based in Milwaukee; Pleasant Rowland Frautschi, philanthropist and creator of the The American Girls Collection of historically accurate books, dolls and accessories; and W. Jerome Frautschi, philanthropist, most well known for his generous gift that made possible Madison's Overture Center for the Arts.
